Improve this question. Abel Abel I don't mind people voting this down, but can you elaborate? I already said in my intro that if this question should not be asked here you should vote to Close, but these related questions, with many upvotes, suggests this is the right place: stackoverflow. Machavity, I understand, but this is not about licensing advice I know what license I have and what I want already , it is about understanding what happened here, i.
But as can be seen by my answer, contrary to Microsoft's instructions on the Preview-page, this scenario is not possible anymore since VS See also the linked answers, they are much more on the "licensing advice" topic, imo perhaps they should be moved too? Either way, if it should be moved, it should be moved ;. I actually started a Meta on it because I had some second thoughts. If they OK it I'll withdraw the close vote.
I agree it's an edge case. Maybe I should reword it somehow. Just did. Hope it's clearer now and more in line with on topic guidelines. Add a comment. Sorted by: Reset to default. I did receive an answer from Microsoft after posting again Bottom line is: in their EULA they do not forbid this scenario, and on the Preview Editions page, they only say "we do not recommend it" , but as the answer from Microsoft shows, it is not only not recommended, it is simply not possible.
So: if you use Enterprise Preview then the Trial License is shared with the RTM License for the same product even though they are physically different licenses.
A Professional License is not valid to test-drive Enterprise Preview. Having no license at all means: you can only use Preview until the license expires. Citrix Licensing Quick Guide. It's free because it essentially is only useful for learning and making products that lock you into really high cost charges down the road. Development studios are free for every major platform. Don't just jump into VS because you can get a free version. Wouldn't it be better to use something that isn't. NET centric then? If you are making software, you don't want that kind of lock in. If you are using it internally, it makes your costs and risks higher. If you are selling it it devalues the value of your software.
If you are hosting it, it massively grows your hosting costs. And VS isn't that fast for development, it's a costly platform to work with in terms of developer productivity.
I should explain my background, I used to work on Linux and Netbeans and stuff, my foray into. Exactly where I'd expect. NET to be the least useful. New code base, locked into the problems of. NET for the product, is something your operations people should have panicked when you proposed.
NET in production under most circumstances? And I don't say this lightly. I've been a developer for 28 years. I've owned and run. NET dev shops. I'm a certified. NET developer. I've run. NET production operations for SaaS. I'm not just certified on.
NET, but I wrote one of the. NET certifications. I run. NET apps today that have been in production for 14 years. I've been doing. NET since the initial release. I run a global software firm that has done. NET development. I'm accutely aware of how tempting. NET can be to startups that don't look at the big picture, and why it's best to run far, far away. Totally free and unlimited. Does not share the common VS code base. I ask you this earnestly, what do you think is a reasonable replacement for.
NET, keep in mind, I am in the business of developing Web-based applications and console apps. I tried developing with Java, but for the kind of stuff I am trying to do, it turned out to be pretty slow. NET days. What a load of crap that was. But it was the best at the time. So things are relative. We were early pioneers, which was awesome. And we liked ASP at the time. Looking back
